Map display is like other displays of J sentences (boxed, tree, linear, paren) shows structure of the expressions. It combines compactness of linear display and structure of boxed form in an expressive way.
This image is done manually in Paint by making nested boxes, cutting out the bottom part, and filling alternating areas.
