Introduction to "WS" - save variables to file
Often, in J, we put a lot of effort into creating our arrays. Ideally, we should be able to re-create these arrays from scratch as needed but sometimes we'd like to save the variables as they are. This is why I wrote the following namespace "WS" (for Workspace - a concept from APL).
The main function, fileVar, saves a variable to a file in the directory specified; its inverse function, unfileVar, creates the variable from the file so saved.
Here is the code: WS.ijs. Load this and enter USAGE_WS_ to get a brief description of how to use some of the most high-level functions.
Example Use
Save a variable to file:
$var1=: 'The main function, ''fileVar'', saves a variable to a file in the directory specified' 83 'C:\Temp\' fileVar_WS_ 'var1' +-+--------+ |1|VAR1.DAT| +-+--------+
Replace the value of the variable with something else.
$var1=: 'something else' 14
Retrieve the saved value:
'C:\Temp\' unfileVar_WS_ 'var1' NB. Restore saved value. +-+------------------------+ |1|+--------+--------+----+| | ||C:\Temp\|VAR1.DAT|var1|| | |+--------+--------+----+| +-+------------------------+ $var1 83 var1 The main function, 'fileVar', saves a variable to a file in the directory specified
Some General Information About the Code
In addition to the files (one per unique variable name), these functions also use a directory file, referenced by global DIRFL, named "#dir.dir" in each unique directory where variables are saved. This is merely two columns of text: filename variable-name. There are several functions for maintaining this directory file, but it is plain text to make it easy to adjust manually in an editor.
My own functions in the required "filefns" are probably all included in the "General Utilities" section at the end of the code but I have not tested this. Please get in touch with me at <devon AT SPAMFREE acm DOT org> if you have any problems with this code.
The following code is arranged in these sections: introduction, table-of-contents (listing global variables and functions in order), main routines, general utilities at end.

DEFDIR=: getTempDir '' NB.* DEFDIR: Default directory with variables on file.
NB.* USAGE: brief explanation on how to use some top-level functions.
USAGE=: 0 : 0
The 2 top-level functions are "saveAllVars" and "loadAllVars".
saveAllVars_WS_ ''
saves all variables from the base namespace to the temp directory.
loadAllVars_WS_ ''
restores these variables to the base namespace.
The directory to which files are written, along with the
directory file named by "DIRFL", is the right argument of
"saveAllVars" and "loadAllVars". The default directory is named
by "DEFDIR" and defaults to the temp directory (returned by
"getTempDir".)
Individual variables may be written to or read from file with
"fileVar" and "unfileVar", respectively. For example, to save
the global variable "lotsaNums" to directory "C:\Temp":
'C:\Temp' fileVar_WS_ 'lotsaNums'
To subsequently read the variable back from file:
'C:\Temp' unfileVar_WS_ 'lotsaNums'
